Wild Heart $9.99 Stevie Nicks was following both her debut solo album, Bella Donna (1981), which had topped the charts, sold over a million copies (now over four million), and spawned four Top 40 hits, and Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage (1982), which had topped the charts, sold over a million copies (now over two million), and spawned three Top 40 hits (including her “Gypsy”), when she released her second solo album, The Wild Heart. She was the most successful American female pop singer of the time. Not surprisingly, she played it safe: The Wild Heart contained nothing that would disturb fans of her previous work and much that echoed it. As on Bella Donna, producer Jimmy Iovine took a simpler, more conventional pop/rock approach to the arrangements than Fleetwood Mac’s inventive Lindsey Buckingham did on Nicks’s songs, which meant the music was more straightforward than her typically elliptical lyrics. Iovine did get a Mac-like sound on “Nightbird,” in which Nicks repeated her invocation to “the white winged dove” from Bella Donna’s “Edge of Seventeen,” and on “Sable on Blond,” a “Gypsy” soundalike. His most daring effort was the album’s leadoff single, “Stand Back,” which boasted a disco tempo. Elsewhere, the songs were largely interchangeable with those on Bella Donna, even down to the obligatory duet with Tom Petty. Nicks seemed to know what she was up to — one song was called “Nothing Ever Changes.” As a result, The Wild Heart sold to the faithful — it made the Top Ten, sold over a million copies, and spawned three Top 40 hits (“Stand Back,” “Nightbird,” and “If Anyone Falls”). And that was appropriate: if you loved Bella Donna, you would like The Wild Heart very much. ~ William Ruhlmann |

Junk Of The Heart $16.98 Having watched the likes of Kaiser Chiefs and Hard-Fi crash and burn with their early 2000s changes in direction, fellow mid-noughties indie band the Kooks, perhaps unsurprisingly, only tentatively step outside their usual comfort zone on third effort Junk of the Heart. “Time Above the Earth” smothers Luke Pritchard’s distinctive, slurring tones in layers of lush strings to produce the band’s first fully orchestral offering, “Taking Pictures of You” is a slightly experimental slice of ambient pop, packed with languid grooves, buzzing synths, and reverb-drenched reverse guitar effects, while “Runaway” has shades of the Police with its cod-reggae beats, subtle synths, and new wave melodies. But with regular producer Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air) still on board, the majority of Junk’s 12 tracks feature the same kind of inoffensive, acoustic, Brit-pop songs about girls that saw debut Inside In, Inside Out and follow-up Konk top the U.K. charts. The jangly, Dodgy-esque, summery opening title track, the breezy Kinks-esque harmonies of “Eskimo Kiss,” and the rousing, singalong chorus of “How’d You Like That” seem destined to sit at the top of commercial radio playlists for months on end, but there’s very little to get excited about with the cliched soft rock break-up song “Killing Me,” the derivative honky tonk of “Mr. Nice Guy,” and the plodding “F*** the World Off,” whose lazy rhythms and gentle folk riffs are more “let’s sit down and have a cup of tea” than the expletive defiance in its title. It’s hard to see where the Kooks fit in among a musical landscape that has altered dramatically during their three-year hiatus, and while their play-it-safe approach may mean they’re less likely to suffer the rapid sales decline of their contemporaries, they are now in danger of becoming indie pop’s answer to Westlife. ~ Jon O’Brien |

Playful Heart $15.99 In his mid-sixties when this 2010 disc was released, Robin Trower seems to be getting more productive as he ages. This is the guitarist’s fourth album in three years, including a studio and live project on which he shared top billing with Jack Bruce. Somewhat surprisingly, there is no drop-off in quality. In fact, this hour-long, 11-cut platter contains some of his finest material of the past decade. Everything down to the artwork and packaging is up to the high standards Trower set for himself in his productive and commercially successful ’70s run and truth be told, many of these songs, such as the hooky title track, could easily slot into those classics. There are fewer rockers and neither Trower nor singer Davey Pattison (who shares vocals with the guitarist) has the rumbling lung power of the late James Dewar, but these songs mine the spacy, moody territory staked out by such memorable gems as “Bridge of Sighs” and “I Can’t Wait Much Longer.” The trio format leaves room for Trower’s lines to float and weave throughout tunes, and they benefit from restrained playing by all involved. They find their sweet spot in nuances and subtleties as opposed to heavy riffs. He even leans toward supper club jazz in the sly, fingerpopping, quarter-to-three groove of “Camille,” perhaps the most unusual and shaded approach he has taken. Harder-edged numbers such as “The Turning” are dialed down to maintain the vibe, yet raise the temperature to energize the overall tone. But selections such as “Find Me” nail Trower’s pensive, contemplative atmospherics, influenced by blues, R&B, and of course, Hendrix’s flowing reverb. The nearly eight-minute closing “And We Shall Call It Love” hovers over a boiling, repeating bassline as Trower applies his molten guitar to a solo so sublime, it’s a shame it has to end. While some may bemoan the fact that this really isn’t breaking any new ground, something that can be said for any number of Trower albums, it will still appeal to fans and newcomers as a classy, entirely distinctive work that doesn’t need volume or demonstrative licks to be poignant and effective. ~ Hal Horowitz |

Warm Your Heart [3/20] $54.99 WARM YOUR HEART, Aaron Neville’s 1991 A&M debut, finds the New Orleans crooner bringing his sweet, soulful voice to a collection of pop songs couched in lush production. The opener, a cover of Randy Newman’s “Louisiana 1927,” sets the stage for the star-studded proceedings to follow, with its arrangement by Van Dyke Parks and vocal help from Rita Coolidge and Linda Ronstadt (who also contributes production and arrangements throughout the album). Elsewhere Neville tackles tunes by John Hiatt, Burt Bacharach, Allen Toussaint, Jimmy Buffett, and even a stirring version of “Ave Maria.”Though the choice of material and sleek, polished studio treatments are clear attempts to push Neville toward commercial viability, the R&B lion retains all of his charm in this setting. His angelic tenor, which swoops and flutters like a bird, from delicate falsetto to full-throated passion, is in top form on the lovely ballad “With You in Mind” and Neville’s own work-song-based “Angola Bound.” WARM YOUR HEART succeeds on two levels–it has enough smooth sheen to satisfy fans of adult-contemporary R&B, and enough of Neville’s undeniable talent, grace, and showmanship to please his old-school devotees. |

Peace on Earth (Winter in My Heart) $12.99 Better known for their carefree brand of uplifting Europop, German duo Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders, aka Modern Talking, get to showcase their more emotive repertoire with this 2011 collection of ballads, Peace on Earth (Winter in My Heart). Despite the seasonal title and snowflake-themed artwork, its claims of being a festive album don’t hold up to much scrutiny, as other than “It’s Christmas,” which features a children’s chorus singalong uncannily similar to John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” and 1986 single “Give Me Peace on Earth,” the only Top 40 chart hit featured, its selection of songs isn’t remotely associated with the holiday season. Indeed, in a rather misleading and some would say rather Scrooge-like fashion, this 20-track retrospective is almost exactly the same as 2002’s We Still Have Dreams (The Greatest Love Ballads), with the former In the Garden of Venus album track the only new addition. Those looking for a string of ’80s synth pop yuletide anthems will therefore be mightily disappointed, but for any casual fans who don’t own its virtually identical predecessor, it’s a pretty handy guide to their lesser-known less uptempo back catalog, even if the glossy Max Martin-esque pop of “Don’t Play with My Heart” is the only track to have aged particularly well. Indeed, with material plucked from nine studio albums, starting with 1985 debut The 1st Album (“One in a Million”) right up to 2000’s Year of the Dragon (“Can’t Let You Go”), it’s certainly a representative overview, but if overblown power ballads, Eurovision-friendly love songs, and slightly camp schlager-pop midtempo songs aren’t your thing, this slightly cheeky cash-in will be the stuff of Christmas nightmares. ~ Jon O’Brien |
